VIC: Scholarships plan to lure top students into teaching
The Victorian Opposition plans to improve teachers' professional standing by promising
permanent jobs in state schools and scholarships for teacher trainees.
Opposition Leader JOHN BRUMBY says a Labor government will abolish short-term teaching
contracts and lure top students to take up teaching with the offer of means-tested
scholarships.
Labor also plans to establish a Victorian Institute of Teaching to give teachers the same
kind of representation as lawyers, doctors, and accountants, and boost professional
development programs.
Mr BRUMBY says Victoria faces a severe teacher shortage over the next few years and will
have to recruit overseas and interstate to fill positions, since few young people see teaching
as an attractive option.
He says the average age of teachers is now 47 or 48, so Victoria desperately needs an
injection of new blood into the teaching service.
